First performed within a Good Friday church service on 11th April 1727 at the Leipzig Thomaskirche, Passion according to St. Matthew entered the concert repertoire a hundred years later after Mendelssohn’s discovery and revival of the composition.

Nowadays there are many performances each year, particularly at Eastertide, but it will always remain a major undertaking, taxing the abilities and resources of groups both large and small.  To commemorate the 300th anniversary of that first performance, Levens Choir aim to mount two performances in Lent 2027 in Kendal and Lancaster - towns which, despite their rich cultural life, rarely hear this music live.

We hope to be joined by a professional orchestra and soloists and collaborate with a local youth choir.  Plans are still at an early stage, and funding will be a challenge.  If you feel able to support this effort, click here.
